SONGS OF THE YEAR

1. Atmosphere, "Shhh" -- A hidden track at the end of "Seven's Travels," it's Slug's playful love song to his home turf, with references to Prince, mosquitoes and the reasons he wants to raise his son here. East Coast critics maybe don't get it, but we do. 22 points. 5380

2. Faux Jean, "Drunk & Stoned" -- The title's subject matter really doesn't come from the lyrics, but it shows in the music: an easy-grooving, psychedelic mix of loud guitars and out-there harmonies. 20 points. 5359

3. (tie) Brother Ali, "Forest Whitiker" -- The rapper references the less-than-beautiful movie star to poke at his own unusual appearance, while producer Ant shows his prowess at making sexy, slinky beats. 16 points. 5352

Atmosphere, "Trying to Find a Balance" -- The single from "Seven's Travels," its angry, frantic tone underlines the chaotic nature of life on the road. 5350

5. (tie) Superhopper, "New Fresh Midwest" -- The powerful indie-rock quartet's highly charged, anthemic call for more substantive rock 'n' roll. It makes its case musically, too. 12 points. 5381

Paul Westerberg, "Crackle & Drag" -- Paul's take on Sylvia Plath and suicide, the acoustic version on "Come Feel Me Tremble" is one of his best ballads in years. 12 5366

7. (tie) Revolver, "Silhouettes"

Soviettes, "Blue Stars"

Hindu Rodeo, "Band With My Dad" 10 points.
